Gratitude, Community, and Belonging: A Thanksgiving Reflection

Thanksgiving is often described as a time to gather with family, share a meal, and reflect on what we are thankful for. For many newcomers and immigrants, however, celebrating this holiday can feel challenging — being far from family and familiar traditions can make moments like these feel isolating. At Beyond Borders Youth Network (BBYN), our mission has always been to create spaces where youth and newcomers feel seen, supported, and connected.

This year, we hosted a Friendsgiving dinner for our community — immigrants, newcomers, and allies — and it was a powerful reminder of why we do this work. The evening was filled with stories, laughter, and home-cooked meals shared among people who, in many cases, do not have family close by.

It wasn’t just a gathering; it was a space of connection, care, and shared belonging. For many participants, it was the first time they truly felt a sense of “home” during the holiday season.

Moments like these highlight the importance of community support and engagement. They show that impact isn’t just measured in programs or numbers, but in the warmth of connection, the confidence built through belonging, and the joy that comes from shared experiences. Every person who believes in and supports BBYN’s mission plays a part in making this possible. Their support allows newcomers to build skills, grow their networks, and feel empowered to thrive in a new environment.

As BBYN continues to grow, we remain committed to fostering spaces where everyone, particularly youth and newcomers, can find connection, develop skills, and contribute meaningfully to the community.

Thanksgiving reminds us that belonging is something we build together.

We are grateful to everyone who supports this vision, and we look forward to continuing this work with the same heart, dedication, and community spirit that made this Friendsgiving so special.
